We live in the future. It’s crazy to think about the fact that things that were merely works of science fiction as recently as 20 or 30 years ago are now a reality. So much of what we interact with on a daily basis is connected. That right there is the foundation of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), a concept coined by a British entrepreneur named Kevin Ashton in 1999. In 2016, the Internet of Things is growing, and the telecom industry has a lot to look forward to.
What is the Internet of Things?
If you’re not familiar with the concept, IoT deals with the concept that everything around us is electronically integrated and interconnected, and it’s all gathering and sharing data nonstop. Things like smartphones and smartwatches, smart cars and smart homes are all on the rise, making the world around us unequivocally “smart”. But the concept also encompasses technologies like heart monitors, field operations tools crucial in firefighting, and biochips in pets and farm animals. Think as broadly as you can about the realm of data gathering and data transfer through technology. That is the Internet of Things.
How Will It Affect the Telecom Industry?
Telecommunications is arguably the hub of the Internet of Things. Those of us in the industry have to be constantly aware of not only the ways in which the technology around us is communicating and helping us gather and share information, but also in the ways these technologies are evolving and making other technologies obsolete. The challenge right now is that we’re in a middle ground. Right now, telecom is tasked with finding a way to meld older communications technologies with the new, making the transition as seamless and easy as possible. There are a lot of changes currently happening and even more approaching soon, so there’s plenty to be excited about (or wary of, depending on your stance). Regardless, it’ll be exciting to see what happens next.
We live among the Internet of Things. So many objects that we interact with on a daily basis are gathering and transferring information, making the world we live in a truly fascinating one. At Delta Intellicom, we’re excited to stay at the forefront of communications technologies to best prepare you for your role in the Internet of Things.
